Marc Chagall at Galerie Michael

Visit Exhibition HERE

In these troubling times, we sought out happiness, and quickly settled on 20th century Modern Master, Marc Chagall, to be our next exhibition. Here was an artist who had the rare ability to start each morning fresh–as if each day was the first. He saw each flower as the most brilliant, each fruit as the sweetest, and each woman as the most beautiful. What better person could there be to give us a positive perspective?

What’s more is that some of these works were part of a collection that had not been seen for sixty years–and never by the public. They were secreted away in the secure cabinets of the descendants of Chagall’s printmaker, Charles Sorlier. These were works that not only captured the amazing colors that are quintessentially Chagall, but were hand-colored by the master himself. These were the very proofs that then gave birth to the graphic masterworks that grace the walls of museums, galleries, and private collections the world over.

Chris Clamp at Jerald Melberg Gallery

Visit Exhibition HERE

Chris Clamp has a singular and poignant vision which derives primarily from his love of family, inquisitiveness, and keen interest in sometimes quirky, sometimes whimsical, but always personal objects which he renders with great skill. The clarity of light and pureness of color that Clamp achieves in his paintings give them a surface that is both beautifully crafted and uniquely his own. Deceptively simple, it does not take long for the viewer to discover, and revel in, the complexity of surface, composition, and layers of nuanced meaning. This is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Florence Miller Pierce at Addison Rowe Gallery

Visit Exhibition HERE
Florence Miller Pierce was known for thought-provoking abstract, non-objective, monochromatic painting rooted in her dedication to Zen Buddhism and meditation. Many of her works give the appearance of floating off the wall, something she achieved with richly colored and textured geometric shapes—polygons, triangles, and rectangles—encased in divided layers of transparent resin over colors that had been softened through mixing with with milled fiberglass.

Working with resin to create textures occurred for her in 1969 when she 51 years old and was in her New Mexico studio making foam sculpture. A chance spill of resin landed on a piece of aluminum foil, and when it hardened, it ‘shimmered’, and she was fascinated. Learning that she could create an interesting effect with resin adhering to mirrored tiles, “she would continue with the new body of work for nearly 35 years.” (Regan)

Surrealism Continues Its Market Rise

  • Surrealists have been a hot item in the upper echelon of the art market and continue to climb. Famous modern artists like Magritte, Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst have been garnering larger sales at auction, cementing the movement as leading the industry of global collecting. The rise of Surrealism “mirrors a larger market trend toward a return to representational and figurative work,” said Emmanuel Di Donna, director of New York’s Di Donna Galleries. The movement’s dreamy content and stark comparisons influence the work of emerging artists who have been successful in contemporary auctions, such as Jonathan Gardner, Julie Curtiss, and Nicolas Party. The exploration of the subconscious, and how it has influenced the art of the Surrealists, has been a key factor in the recent return to figuration in contemporary art.

Art and Science Converge

  • Science has influenced artists’ work historically, and it seems that now science acknowledges the artist’s perspective as well. The next edition of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time mega exhibition series opening in 2024 will be “Art x Science x LA”, presenting an ambitious range of exhibitions and public programs that explore the intersections between the visual art and science. For example, the link in the City of LA between its artists and scientific community, like the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. Additionally, as scientists work on staggeringly abstract problems like climate change, they need help delivering news in a way that people will respond to and act on, and artists help convey these complicated matters in their universal language. For example, The TBA21 Academy has commissioned research-focused artworks related to global warming and the issues that humans will be dealing with in the future.

Artists’ Exclusivity is Evolving

  • Artists are shifting the way they work with galleries, and we see more flexibility when it comes to moving through different parts of the market, while retaining relationships. “With the development of supersized galleries with multiple locations worldwide, the trend has also gone in the other direction,” asserted Maggie Kayne, a partner at Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery in L.A. Her gallery has moved to co-representation with a number of their artists like James Turrell, David Lynch, and Robert Irwin. “In our opinion, the most effective way to work with an artist is to have strategic partners who all bring different skill sets, different connections, different networks….I imagine there will be more movement in that direction.” As the hierarchies of the art world seem to flatten, it means artists are getting more work.

The Transcendental Painting Group:
Spiritualism and Modern Art

In 1938, a group of Modern artists living in Santa Fe rejected the idea of painting their Southwestern desert surroundings like so many artists before them. Instead of painting a stunning landscape or scene of traditional Indian life, they turned their gaze to Abstraction and Spirituality. They referred to themselves as the Transcendental Painting Group. The artwork they made was mostly non-objective, influenced at the time by Wassily Kandinsky. (read more about TPG)

FADA Member Gallery, Addison Rowe, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has an extensive inventory of these artworks. See below a few of our favorite images and be sure to check out Addison Rowe’s recent exhibition dedicated to the Transcendental Painting Group.

Street Art as Social Voice

Themes in contemporary art are continually updating. As times change and culture evolves, artists react spontaneously in public locations with public visibility – often times unofficially and independently.

The Art Newspaper’s recent article “Banksy paints London Underground train with sneezing rat not wearing face mask” details the iconic street artist’s latest work.

For intriguing works by renowned artists of that genre, FADA.org holds a vast inventory of artworks created by contemporary street artists.

The New Frontier: A Physically Distanced Art World

Some FADA galleries have now re-opened with timed appointments for exhibition viewing and increased sanitization/safety protocols. This is good news!

Art world marketing pivoted from the social aspect to be laser focused on digital presentation. That’s where FADA’s Call-to-Action search excels to assist in your quest. FADA.org offers the ability to investigate the artwork based on Genre, Subject and Artist from our Trusted Gallery Network® of art dealers around the country.

Together, for now, we miss the thrill and excitement of live art events. In the meantime, we can navigate the art world from the safety of our individual space as galleries, museums and nonprofits continue to mount fresh exhibitions, and dealers continue to offer newly acquired works of art.
