Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Christopher Clamp. This body of work continues the artist’s previous explorations of realism and object portraiture, and marks Clamp’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

Christopher Clamp has a singular and poignant vision, which stems from his love of family, sense of inquisitiveness, and keen interest in sometimes quirky, sometimes whimsical, but always personal objects. The clarity of light and pureness of color that Clamp achieves in his paintings give them a surface that is both beautifully crafted and uniquely his own. Though his work appears subdued at first, it does not take long for the viewer to discover and revel in its complexity of surface, composition, and layers of nuanced meaning.

Christopher Clamp is a native of Leesville, South Carolina and received his BFA with a concentration in painting from Winthrop University in 2001. Earlier this year, Clamp was honored with a solo exhibition at the Hoyt Center for the Arts in Newcastle, PA. The institution subsequently acquired one of his paintings. His work is also included in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA; the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC and Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Clamp was also recently selected to show work in the exhibition 80×80, which took place at the Mint Museum in the summer of 2016, as well as the prestigious biennial Re-Presenting Representation at the Arnot Museum in Elmira, New York. In 2001, his work was included in the South Carolina Triennial at the South Carolina State Museum.

Jerald Melberg Gallery has published a full color catalogue to document the show entitled Stories In Stillness, which will be available to visitors. There will also be a Coffee and Conversation artist lecture led by Christopher Clamp at the gallery on Saturday, September 16 at 11 a.m.

New York (October 10, 2017) – Questroyal Fine Art is proud to present Bound for Posterity: Henry Martin Gasser (1909–1981). An artist distinguished by one hundred awards nationwide and included in sixty museum collections, Gasser is the sleeping giant of the twentieth century. He was a prolific artist and active leader of the Newark art school, heading the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and authoring seven instructional art books. The exhibition and sale will showcase the artist’s skill as both an oil painter and watercolorist and demonstrate the full range of his talent, including industrial scenes, city views, New England harbor towns, and snow-covered villages.

Gasser was an American painter in every sense. Through persistence and a spirit of originality, he turned humble scenes of urban American life in the mid-twentieth century into extraordinary works of art that were widely praised by the art world. Bound for Posterity: Henry Martin Gasser (1909–1981) presents a rare opportunity to acquire paintings by one of the most appealing artists of the twentieth century. In the words of gallery owner Louis M. Salerno, “With all that Gasser has accomplished, he is somehow not quite famous yet, and, fortuitously, the value of his paintings has not kept pace with his escalating popularity.”

A private opening reception will take place on November 9, 2017. All proceeds from opening reception ticket sales will benefit CaringKind – The Heart of Alzheimer’s Caregiving. Limited tickets are available for purchase by visiting www.caringkindnyc.org/questroyal.

The exhibition and sale will be accompanied by a 32-page catalogue, which features 32 color plates, an introduction from gallery owner Louis M. Salerno, and biographical information about the artist. New York (August 11, 2017) – Collectors of American art may now request Questroyal Fine Art’s anticipated Important American Paintings, Volume XVIII: Be Uncool, available in October. The hardcover, ninety-six-page catalogue features thirty-seven color plates of paintings by some of the most important nineteenth- and twentieth-century American artists, with examples ranging from masterpieces of the Hudson River School to American Modernism. In keeping with Questroyal’s philosophy, Be Uncool celebrates masterworks of American art that are sometimes overlooked by collectors in favor of what is trendy. In the words of gallery owner Louis M. Salerno, “These canvases may not have instant mass appeal; consequently, they lack the primary requisite of what is considered hip and thus cool and, oddly, most valuable. To many thinking people, what is most anomalous about the present-day economic valuation of paintings is that worth is directly proportionate to contemporary trend, while artistic merit is barely an influencing factor. But all of this presents a great opportunity for those of us who appreciate important American paintings.”

The catalogue presents biographical information on each artist, alongside critical commentary from the artists’ contemporaries, personal remarks from gallery owner Louis M. Salerno, and an essay by gallery director Chloe Heins, titled “Against the Tide of Impermanence: American Paintings and the Experiential Image.” Featured artists include Albert Bierstadt, Ralph Albert Blakelock, Charles Burchfield, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Reginald Marsh, Walter Launt Palmer, Fairfield Porter, William Trost Richards, Worthington Whittredge, and Guy C. Wiggins.

Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new abstract landscapes by Lee Hall (1934-2017). The exhibition is comprised of the last paintings Hall completed before her death in April of this year. Jerald Melberg Gallery has represented Lee Hall for four years and this is her fourth solo exhibition at the gallery.

Lee Hall was a North Carolina native and renowned Abstract Expressionist, whose muses were the American and Mediterranean landscapes. Her paintings, titled by the locale they represent, were rendered using sophisticated, muted color relationships and varied, textural painting techniques. Her poetic landscapes are iterations of the tradition of abstraction derived from meditations on nature, whose forbearers include a myriad of great minds from painters of the Sung Dynasty to modernist John Marin.

She leaves an enormous legacy as an exceptional painter as well as a respected educator and writer. Hall stood toe to toe with the great artists of the New York School, earning herself representation at Betty Parsons’ famed New York gallery. Lee also served as president of the esteemed Rhode Island School of Design, and she has written a number of books, including biographies of Willem and Elaine DeKooning and Betty Parsons.

Lee Hall generously gave her estate to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, and the proceeds from acquisitions of her work through the gallery are donated directly to the museum.

Eckert Fine Art is pleased to present Kit White – Recent Work + Line Into Form, a solo presentation of White’s latest paintings in complement to the release of his new monograph, Kit White Line Into Form. The opening event will be held from 4-7pm on Saturday, September 9 at 12 Old Barn Road in Kent, Connecticut. A special guest appearance by Carter Ratcliff, author of Line Into Form, will occur during the opening from 4:30-5pm with book signing to follow. Monographs will be available for purchase during the opening. The exhibition will continue through October 1st.

This exhibition looks at White’s recent developments in painting as it relates to the span of his career, which has recently been fully contextualized by author, editor, and art historian and theorist Carter Ratcliff. Taking into account White’s studies at Harvard University from the mid-70s, to work being produced up until 2015, Kit White Line Into Form accomplishes the daunting task of illustrating White’s work in full chronological scope. At 195 pages and featuring over 120 color plates, Ratcliff sites major examples of White’s work to back up his biographical and theoretical information.

Featuring special guest Carter Ratcliff, author of Line Into Form.
Opening reception: Saturday, September 9, 4-7:00pm

Marissa Lee Benedict is interested in the relationships between natural earth systems and human stabilization technologies. She explores the inherent tension between the fundamentally variable and unstable nature of naturally occurring phenomena and the human need for predictable sustenance, reliable energy, and control over the natural world. The installation in our Project Room considers both the strength and the fragility of forms that rely on the logic of assembly, constructed of a raised, gridded data center floor with sound and video components.

Brooklyn-based painter James Greco exudes a sophisticated understanding of the expressive and emotive powers of painting. His newest works are paintings on unstretched, flat tarps on which he rapidly and intuitively applies color from punctured spray paint cans, in a contemporary iteration of action painting.

His older paintings on canvas are luscious works in which abstraction and representation collide with dynamic results.

We are proud to have been one of the founding galleries of this event, exhibiting every year since the art fair’s inception in 2012. The 2017 EXPO marks our sixth consecutive year presenting a show at this prestigious venue. For the occasion, we’ve put together a grand, robust presentation (our largest one ever!) with over 80 artworks.
