Kikuo Saito (1939-2016) is an internationally acclaimed artist who was born in Tokyo. In 1966, Saito began working in New York City, where he would become the studio assistant for Helen Frankenthaler, Larry Poons, and Kenneth Noland.
The dynamic paintings within this exhibition were created by placing the canvases on the floor. While painting, Saito was able to dance around the canvases, generating motion and energy. Moving freely around his works allowed Saito to layer his compositions in a complex, rhythmic manner. These paintings are filled with pigment from edge to edge; they are beautifully abstract and allude to atmospheric environments. Saito’s lyrical paintings are robust yet harmonious and are defined by thoughtful color and powerful brushstrokes.
The body of work presented in this collection came from The Estate of Kikuo Saito and are being shown for the first time. The works represent the culmination of decades of artistic development; they are some of the artist’s most fluid, evolved, passionate and vibrant paintings.
These works help us to honor the memory of Kikuo Saito, a great artist of our time.

Important Cuban Artworks, this year in its 15th edition.
Formed over more than six decades, the collection of the distinguished art historians William and Abigail Gerdts focuses on mid-to-late nineteenth-century American still-life painting. A Lifetime of Collecting is only the second time that such a large selection from the collection has been shown publicly. The exhibition tells the story of how this treasured personal collection came to be, and celebrates the owners’ discerning connoisseurship and devotion to the study and appreciation of the American still life.
For the first time, Nedra Matteucci Galleries will participate in the American Art Fair, the premier art fair devoted to showcasing museum quality American art. As the exclusive specialist focusing on western art, our booth will present some of the finest works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For more information, please feel free to contact us or visit TheAmericanArtFair.com.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 28th from 2-8 PM at Rehs Contemporary Galleries, 5 East 57th Street 8th Floor, and will remain on view through November 17th, 2017. In conjunction with the Art Renewal Center, Contemporary Figures unites an impressive and diverse roster around some of the finest and most unique figurative artists producing work today. More than 25 paintings and drawings in all, will be on display by a group that includes: Emanuele Dascanio, Daniel Gerhartz, Vanessa Lemen, Sergio Lopez, Tim Rees, and Marc Scheff.
Contemporary Figures aims to highlight just a fragment of the expansive genre, while showcasing works that demonstrate immense talent and creativity. From the painstakingly precise, and near photographic charcoal and graphite renderings by Emanuele Dascanio, to the mesmerizing mixed media resin blocks by Marc Scheff, the exhibition displays a range of approaches and techniques in service of the figure. Daniel Gerhartz keeps his attention on the female form, with a strong foundation in the work of nineteenth century masters, most notably French and American Impressionist painters ranging from John Singer Sargent to Alphonse Mucha. Similarly, Sergio Lopez highlights the female form but takes the subject in a vastly different direction – influenced by the Golden Age Illustrators and graffiti writers. Tim Rees stresses compositional beauty, preferring to allow the composition to tell the story – the work is all about technique and using a thoughtful and logical approach to producing an idea. On the other hand, Vanessa Lemen credits her inspiration to moments of personal adversity and resilience – a concept that is further embodied by her organic process and the work itself; seemingly chaotic yet peaceful and elegant.
Each artist reveals not only a personal vision of the human figure, but a commentary on what he or she believes is important in our current environment – what is meaningful and what is significant.

Complimenting the artwork is the eloquent and expressive narrative by author and past assistant winemaker, Jerry Stroud. Jerry explores California’s most prosperous American Viticultural Areas:
• the North Coast AVA
• the Sierra Foothills AVA
• the Central Coast AVA
• the South Coast AVA
• and the Central Valley
Distinguished by geographic features and defined boundaries, these large wine appellations encompass many smaller appellations, each with their own distinct terroirs that give California grapes and wine their unique flavors and aromas. Along The California Wine Trail explores the fascinating attributes of these areas, and leads the reader on an epic journey — along inland roads, through valleys, over hillsides, and steep coastal ranges where we find ourselves in awe of the vineyards’ abundance; revealing the challenges, triumphs, and hardships experienced by those past immigrants, and present pioneers who have contributed to the industry’s success.
The grand opening exhibition will be held at George Stern Fine Arts in West Hollywood, California. Following this opening exhibition, the show will travel to various wine venues along California’s wine trail. Have your book signed by Kerne Erickson and author, Jerry Stroud! Also meet the publisher, Greg Young, whose adoration of Erickson’s art and passion for California wine has made this project a reality.

Morgan Sims’ newest paintings are based on the shapes, surfaces, and characteristics of rocks and minerals. The artist is looking at the nature of imperfect, striated surfaces, and how these qualities are presented and perceived. Sims embraces intuitive mark making in the service of illusion, straddling a fine line between unplanned, spontaneous abstraction and deliberate, rational representation.
Sim’s geometric paintings start with ideas explored by 1970s hard-edge Op Art, but provide an alternative to the pristine surfaces and clean solids of the pure Op Art tradition. They are modified and enhanced by the use of distressed and organically worked surfaces. Like his predecessors, he starts with a simple, geometric-shaped, linen canvas, and generates a dimensional illusion with line and color. Sims then avoids the temptation to seek perfection, instead introducing layers of striated color and texture that highlight a tension between the underlying geometry and the propensity towards decay of all physical objects. Similarly, the line pantings are studies in “impure” line work. Like the distressed paintings, they add a hand made quaility to the “perfection” of the geomtery; making them emotional as well as rational.
The drip paintings process and distort symbols and images into near abstraction, retaining just enough of the image to retain a rudimentary recognition. He thoughtfully extends the reach of methods such as pixillation, halftoning, and patterning through manual means which humanizes the painting so that there is a warmth and handmade quality.
Sims’ neon works are concerned with the interaction of light, space, and color.
