Jim Stella: Over the Edge, an exhibition of mixed media works by artist Jim Stella, is on view in Rosenbaum Contemporary’s Boca Raton, Fla., gallery (150 Yamato Road) through June 14. The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Stella coined the term “rap art” to describe his work, which uses words and colors to express his feelings and ideas about news and events, generally of an urban nature. He uses texture, color and the size of various words and symbols as visual entry points for viewers to engage with his works. However, by leaving his art untitled, Stella avoids imposing a single meaning, making the experience deeply personal for each viewer. He uses multiple mediums, such as oil paint and graphite, to help viewers focus on different details when his works are viewed from varying distances. He prefers to work in a large format to allow his thoughts to flow quickly in several different directions. “The size is designed to take up your field of view yet contain small elements your mind can follow,” Stella said.

Stella studied sculpture and anatomy at Pratt Institute in New York and graduated with high honors from the University of Michigan, which he attended on a medical illustration scholarship.  He continued his education at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where he studied watercolor.

Slonem is considered one of the great colorists of our time. Slonem is famous for his neo-expressionist works of butterflies, bunnies, birds and blossoms, themes which will be on display in the exhibition. He has had over 300 one-man shows in galleries and museums internationally. His work can also be found in the permanent collections of more than 250 museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and the Miro Foundation and is part of private collections worldwide, including those of many celebrities.

Jeff Kowatch: Jeux de Mojo, an exhibition of oil bar on Dibond drawings, is now on view in Rosenbaum Contemporary’s Boca Raton, Fla., gallery (150 Yamato Road) through April 5. The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more than 15 years, Kowatch practiced Zen meditation, dedicating four hours daily to cultivating inner stillness. Through a profound experience of enlightenment, he discovered the essence of being fully alive in the present, a principle that now informs every stroke in his work.  In Jeux de Mojo, he delves into the interplay between energy and stillness. The title is a playful twist on the French saying jeux de mot, meaning “wordplay.” “The term ‘mojo’ suggests spellcasting and mysterious energy, which resonates deeply with my creative process,” Kowatch said. “Each painting becomes a kind of incantation—an invitation to pause, reflect and experience the alchemy of color, texture and form…The title Jeux de Mojo reflects a dynamic dance between light and shadow, action and pause, mystery and revelation. My works, paired with sharp, koan-like titles, aim to provoke thought and create moments of enchantment—spaces where viewers can reconnect with their own inner stillness and vitality. With this series, I offer paintings as spells: visual spaces where energy and stillness converge, transforming perception and inviting the magic of presence.”

Kowatch’s work was the subject of a monograph published by Skira and can also be found in several public collections including the Musées royaux de Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels, Belgium; the Long Beach Museum of Art and Laguna Art Museum in California; and the Union Theological Seminary in New York.

Jerald Melberg Gallery proudly presents a solo exhibition of collages on both canvas and paper by Lee Hall, a North Carolina native and renowned Abstract Expressionist. Hall’s poetic landscapes are iterations of the tradition of abstraction derived from meditations on nature. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday evening, March 14, from 6-8pm.

Hall’s legacy is one of an exceptional painter as well as a respected educator and writer. Hall stood with the great artists of the New York School, earning herself representation at Betty Parsons’ famed New York gallery. She also served as President of the esteemed Rhode Island School of Design, and wrote a number of books, including biographies of Willem and Elaine DeKooning and Betty Parsons.

Lee Hall generously left her estate to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The proceeds from acquisitions of her work through the gallery directly fund the museum’s educational programs.

Maikel Martinez: Dream Worlds is now on view through March 1 at Rosenbaum Contemporary’s Boca Raton, Fla. gallery (150 Yamato Road). The exhibition features new paintings by popular Cuban artist Maikel Martinez.

While at first glance Martinez’s works appear to be photographs or photorealistic paintings, upon closer inspection they are revealed to be places that do not actually exist. In each painting, Martinez’s memories of places from his past combine with his dreams and internal dialogue to create landscapes that have been reinvented in his mind. As he paints and plans where to place each element, he transfers the emotions he is feeling in the moment to the canvas. Through the process of painting, Martinez achieves a sense of calm, which is reflected in his works. His resulting “dream worlds” are reduced to their minimal elements.

“The images that appear on the canvas represent a kind of magical dictation from my unconscious,” Martinez said. “Throughout the creative process some of these images are transformed while others remain true to the image as originally dreamed.”

Martinez was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba. He received the Landscape Award at the 2000 Salon Nacional, sponsored by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and held in homage to Tiburcio Lorenzo, the Cuban painter recognized as the Cuban “Lord of the Landscape.” His work has been exhibited in institutions and galleries in Europe, North and South America and the Caribbean including the Royal Bank of Canada and the Museo Provincial de Historia in Pinar del Rio, Cuba.

Maikel Martinez: Dream Worlds can be viewed during Rosenbaum Contemporary’s regular Boca Raton gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on its website www.rosenbaumcontemporary.com.

The paintings and works on paper in the exhibition come from a body of work titled in reference to one of December’s writings: “Like the pull of the moon shaping the tides, we control our destiny. Know it’s effortless nature; it’s the way it’s meant to be. And through self-realization comes an understanding of the harmony of existence.”

December’s subjects are an extension of the girl she fantasized about being in her youth and “the exhausting journey of becoming her.” She was born in New York and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.

The works featured in The Many Faces of Maquiamelo are from a series the artist conceived during the pandemic as social distancing and masking forced greater attention on the expressive power of the eyes (the windows to the soul) while mouths were hidden behind protective coverings. His works are also influenced by popular culture such as comics, manga and the bright, candy colors of technology, part of the new genre called technopop. Maquiamelo’s aim with this series is to bring “a message of optimism and hope in post-pandemic times.” His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Bogotá in Colombia; Museo de Las Americas in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho in Santiago, Chile; and Pinacoteca Albertina in Turin, Italy, as well as publications including The Extreme Art of Maquiamelo published by Penguin Random House and Maquiamelo published by the Albertina Press. His work has also been included in important art fairs such at ARTBO in Colombia, ZONAMACO in Mexico, and the LA Art Show, Art New York and Art Miami in the U.S.
