William Parrott was born in Missouri in 1844, and moved west to Oregon with his family as a boy. His early art training is unclear, but he was likely a self-taught painter. He established himself in Portland, maintaining a studio there for more than 20 years. Parrott painted extensively throughout the western states, and is best known for his dramatic landscapes of Mount Hood.

John Ross Key was raised by his grandfather, Francis Scott Key, the author of the Star Spangled Banner. The younger Key studied art in Munich and Paris before settling in Boston where he established a studio. Key enjoyed success while in Boston, and showed his works at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Boston Art Club. In 1869 he moved to San Francisco. While in California Key traveled extensively, painting scenes of Yosemite, Carmel, Tahoe, and the Giant Sequoia trees. Key left California after only two years. He died in Baltimore in 1920.

Joseph Kleitsch was born in Hungary in 1881. He began painting at the age of seven, and was given a scholarship to study art by his native village. Kleitsch was afforded study in Budapest, Munich, and Paris. By the age of 17, he was an accomplished portraitist, with sitters such as Franz Josef of Austria. Furthering his studies in the U.S., Kleitsch painted many prominent local citizens while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. Kleitsch eventually settled in Laguna Beach, California, in 1920, where he established the Kleitsch Academy of Art. His California works, exhibited at the Stendahl Galleries in Los Angeles, were focused on the landscape, gardens, and architecture around his home in Laguna Beach.

A sculptor of Native American and animal subjects, works by Tom Knapp are in the collections of the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming.

Louis Aston Knight was the son of the successful early ex-patriot American Artist, Daniel Ridgway Knight. The younger Knight was born in Paris, and encouraged in his artistic endeavors. He was afforded study with the great French instructor Jules Lefebvre. Beginning in 1894, Knight began exhibiting at the Paris Salon, where he earned a great many awards. A more pure Impressionist than his famous father, Louis Aston Knight was a great admirer of Claude Monet, with whom he enjoyed a friendship, and an affinity for painting en Plein Air.

Emil Kosa was born in Paris in 1903, and moved to the U.S. at the age of 4. A highly trained early California artist, Kosa studied fine art in Prague, Paris, and at the Los Angeles area schools, California, Otis, and Chouinard Institutes, ultimately teaching at the latter. Kosa worked in special effects in Hollywood for 35 years, and in 1963 He was awarded an Oscar for his work in Cleopatra. Painting in both oils and watercolors, his body of work includes landscapes, coastals, portraits, and still lifes. Kosa died in Los Angeles in 1968, and was a member of the National Academy of Design, and the California and American Watercolor Societies.

Born in Germany, Max Kuehne is remembered for his vivid, colorist landscapes. A student of William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, Kuehne was a dark, academic style, which he abandoned for the lighter, freer work of the Fauvist artists of France.

Matlilda Lotz was born in Tennessee, where she and her family were displaced by the Civil War. In 1869 the Lotz family arrived in California, settling in San Jose. Having shown artistic promise very early on, Matilda was encouraged in her artistic studies, and enrolled in the San Francisco School of Design, under Virgil Williams. Lotz continued her studies, first with William Keith, then in Paris where she was awarded an Honorable Mention for works exhibited at the Paris Salon. The latter part of her life was spent in Paris, where she was associated with Rosa Bonheur, and Hungary, where she died in 1923.

Canadian born, Robert Lougheed studied at the Ecole des Beauz Arts in Montreal, and the Art students League in New York. For over 30 years, Lougheed contributed western theme works for magazines such as National Geographic and Readers Digest. Lougheed was committed to classical interpretation of the landscape, and he rejected the modernist influences of his era. His works mirror his respect and encyclopedic knowledge of his primary love, the southwest American Landscape.

William McCloskey was born in Philadelphia in 1859, and studied art there at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. McCloskey married the artist Alberta Binford, with whom he established a portrait studio in Los Angeles in 1884. The McCloskeys moved frequently, living and working in England, France, New York, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. McCloskey is best remembered for his finely detailed still-lifes of paper-wrapped citrus fruit. William McCloskey died in Orange, California, in 1941.
