Henry Francois Farny was born in Alsace, France, in 1847, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1853. His family settled briefly in Pennsylvania where Farny was introduced to the Seneca Tribe, beginning a lifelong fascination with Native Americans. In 1859 he again moved, this time to Cincinnati, where he is most associated. Farny was internationally known for his, usually small, non-dramatized paintings of Indian life. Traveling frequently to the west, Farny was adopted in to the Sioux tribe before his death in Cincinnati in 1916.
