Emil Kosa (1903-1968)

Emil Kosa was born in Paris in 1903, and moved to the U.S. at the age of 4. A highly trained early California artist, Kosa studied fine art in Prague, Paris, and at the Los Angeles area schools, California, Otis, and Chouinard Institutes, ultimately teaching at the latter. Kosa worked in special effects in Hollywood for 35 years, and in 1963 He was awarded an Oscar for his work in Cleopatra. Painting in both oils and watercolors, his body of work includes landscapes, coastals, portraits, and still lifes. Kosa died in Los Angeles in 1968, and was a member of the National Academy of Design, and the California and American Watercolor Societies.
