Picasso: 50 Years of Printmaking

 

Featuring a selection of great masterpieces that comprise Picasso’s graphic oeuvre, Picasso: 50 Years of Printmaking showcases the finest compositions available to private collectors. In doing so, we hope to capture the breadth and diversity—indeed, the inimitable genius—underlying Picasso’s printmaking prowess.

 

Printmaking—as a fine art—is the process of making artworks by printing, commonly on paper. Printmaking normally includes only the process of creating prints with an element of originality, rather than simply a photographic reproduction of a painting. Accordingly, each piece produced is not a copy, but is considered an original (known

technically as an “impression”), since it is not a reproduction of another work of art.

 

In “Picasso: 50 Years of Printmaking,” we invite viewers to follow Picasso’s creative printmaking journey. Although part and parcel of the artist’s process, each piece survives as a unique and final work in and of itself.

On Paper: 1946-2019

 

Since 1978, Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art has been an important source for Post-War and Contemporary American and European art. The current gallery location opened in 2000 and is located in the heart of Century City, adjacent to Beverly Hills and the west side of Los Angeles. Gallery inventory includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, and prints by established artists from significant Post-War movements including Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Minimalism, Pop Art, and Photorealism.

 

On Paper: 1946-2019 is currently on view at the gallery and online.

Simple Eloquence by Manuel Reyna

 

Jerald Melberg Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Argentine artist, Manuel Reyna.

 

Considered a national treasure in his homeland, Manuel Reyna was born in Cordoba, Argentina, in 1912, where he lived and worked until his death in 1989. Trained as a brick mason and self-taught as an artist, Reyna was honored by the Museo Caraffa in Cordoba with a major career retrospective in 2004.

 

Reyna’s paintings possess a sense of selflessness as he silently and openly shares his world, his Argentina, with the viewer. There is a wonderful sense of solitude within these paintings, a harmony of nature and man communicated through a sensitive approach to color and impeccable attention to composition.

Leslie J. Sacks established his first gallery, Les Art International in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1981. Upon emigrating to the United States, he opened Leslie Sacks Fine Art in Los Angeles in 1992, which became an important American venue specializing in fine art editions and rare works on paper by Modern, Post-War and Contemporary American and European masters.  In 2007 Leslie Sacks Fine Art acquired Bobbie Greenfield Gallery in Santa Monica, California thereby establishing a second venue as Leslie Sacks Contemporary.

Art As Protest, Protest As Art by Vicente Hernández

 

This special selection of twenty paintings comes at a time of historic mass demonstrations in Cuba, where the artist is based. Repeated themes in his protest art include electoral fraud, the absence of free press, censorship and surveillance, the failures of self-imposed isolationism, mass migration, material scarcity of essentials, and the circus-like spectacle of politics on the island.

 

In his work he focuses on the ingenuity and spirit of the people in the face of these issues.
