Matlilda Lotz was born in Tennessee, where she and her family were displaced by the Civil War. In 1869 the Lotz family arrived in California, settling in San Jose. Having shown artistic promise very early on, Matilda was encouraged in her artistic studies, and enrolled in the San Francisco School of Design, under Virgil Williams. Lotz continued her studies, first with William Keith, then in Paris where she was awarded an Honorable Mention for works exhibited at the Paris Salon. The latter part of her life was spent in Paris, where she was associated with Rosa Bonheur, and Hungary, where she died in 1923.
