Gideon Jacques Denny was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1830, and arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush in 1849. Finding work on the San Francisco docks taxing, Denny left for art studies in Milwaukee, with Samuel Marsden Brookes. Denny returned to establish a studio in San Francisco after 6 years and exhibited to favorable reviews. Though he painted occasional landscapes and portraits, Denny specialized in works featuring shipping activity, a subject that fascinated him since boyhood. He was also a inveterate traveler. His works done on travels to South America and Hawaii are highly sought. For more information on Gideon Denny and other artists we represent, please visit the artist index on our gallery website |
